Indexing Mechanisms: How Machines Move Exactly One Step at a Time

Watch an assembly machine work and you will notice a rhythm: hold, move, hold, move. The “move” — advancing a part exactly one station while everything downstream stays rigidly still — is done by an indexing mechanism. The Geneva drive is one member of this family; the pawl-and-star indexer shown below is its simpler cousin.

The anatomy of a step

Pawl-and-star indexing. The driver arm sweeps a full circle; near the end of each turn its pawl drops into a star slot and advances the wheel exactly 45° — one station. The spring detent holds the wheel against drift for the rest of the revolution.
  1. Driver — an arm on a continuously rotating shaft, carrying a spring-loaded pawl.
  2. Star wheel — the output: a disc with slots (or pins, or notches) for each station.
  3. Detent — a spring-loaded pin that presses the star edge and holds it against drift.

Near the end of each driver revolution, the pawl drops into a slot and walks the star wheel around exactly one station — 45° for an eight-point star. The detent is pushed aside during the move, then clicks back to lock the new position. One revolution, one step, thousands of times a day.

Why a detent matters more than it looks

The star wheel spends most of its life parked. During that time, vibration, load bumps, and cutting forces all try to rotate it. The detent — often just a ball in a V-groove — provides a small but always-present restoring torque that pins the wheel in place and absorbs the machine’s own shaking. Precision indexing is as much about holding still as it is about moving.
